He spent 2002 as the Milwaukee Brewers first base coach after guiding Colorado’s High-A affiliate, Salem, to the Carolina League Championship as a manager in 2001…prior to that, he spent two seasons as first base coach with the Reds from 1999-2000. After retiring as a player in 1990, Dave began his coaching career as first base coach for the Cardinals in 1991-92, then worked as St. Louis’ advance scout in 1993 and was the bunting and base running coach for the Detroit Tigers in the final two months of the 1996 season.

Dave played 16 seasons in the majors with eight different organizations, finishing with a .272 career average and 395 stolen bases, including 79 for the Reds in 1980…those 79 steals still rank as the third-most in franchise history! He hit a career-best .318 during that ‘79 campaign, helping lead the Reds into the playoffs. He posted a .357 average in the National League Championship Series, but Cincinnati was swept in 3 games by the Pirates. in 1984, he stole 60 bases, while batting .308 with an AL-leading 15 triples for the Blue Jays and recorded his 1,000th career hit that season on Aug. 31, 1984 off Minnesota’s Pete Filson. Dave was an original member of the Seattle Mariners in 1977.
